Architectural Association of Kenya (AAK) Statement on the Collapsed Boundary Wall Along Suswa Road, Parklands

AAK Statement on Collapsed Boundary Wall Along Suswa Road, Parklands

The Architectural Association of Kenya (AAK) expresses deep sorrow and concern over the tragic incident that occurred on 11th May 2025, resulting in the loss of two lives. This tragic incident underscores the endemic disregard for construction regulations and safety standards, highlighting the urgent need for greater accountability.

Following this incident, our Mulika Mjengo team conducted an independent investigation on 13th May 2025, to identify the cause of the collapse. Specifically, we observed that:

1. Foundation works were carried out beacon to beacon up to the edge of the boundary wall;
2. Root barriers were not adequately installed, and the remaining part of the boundary wall is at risk of collapse;
3. Use of a hydraulic hammer destabilized the soil, threatening the structural integrity of nearby developments;
4. Improper underpinning of existing foundations, lack of props, and sub-standard equipment including ladders compromised the workers' safety.

This incident mirrors a similar tragedy that occurred on 11th February 2025 at a construction site located at the intersection of 3rd Parklands Avenue and Mpaka Road, where a slab collapsed, claiming the life of a worker. Poor construction methodologies appear to be a recurring issue, as further evidenced by recent incidents witnessed in Mombasa and Kisii counties.

Although the site had reportedly been condemned, the developers summoned, and several workers arrested for excavating without approved design drawings, we emphasize that it is the responsibility of the mandated authorities to enforce compliance with building regulations and adherence to safety standards.

Similarly, AAK recommends that corrective measures be urgently undertaken to resolve the above highlighted risks in order to avert further property damage and potential loss of life. We remain committed to promoting safer construction through the Mulika Mjengo Initiative, empowering the public to report unsafe practices.
