Agriculture Cabinet Secretary Mutahi Kagwe visited West Valley Sugar Company where he outlined government plans to transform Kenya’s sugar industry into a major source of electricity and ethanol.
The government is promoting cogeneration and ethanol production to reduce fuel imports, strengthen energy security and create additional income streams for millers and farmers. West Valley currently generates five megawatts of electricity and produces about 20,000 litres of ethanol daily, with potential to increase power output to 15 megawatts through fuller use of bagasse.
