JKIA Modernization and Expansion to Cost KSh154.2 Billion - CS Davis Chirchir

Cabinet Secretary, Ministry of Roads Davis Chirchir on June 18, 2026, in a press statement we have attached below confirmed that procurement for the proposed modernization and expansion of Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) is ongoing through an open international competitive bidding process.

The government expects the contract value not to exceed KSh154.2 billion and stated that the works will include rehabilitation of existing terminals and airfield infrastructure, expansion of current facilities and construction of a new terminal and associated support infrastructure. JKIA's passenger handling capacity is projected to increase from 7.5 million to 22 million annually, with financing being structured through airport-generated revenues and arranged by Trade Development Bank and the African Finance Corporation.

Chirchir also clarified that Zimbabwean businessman Wicknell Chivayo's company, IMC Construction mentioned in Standard Media story did not participate in the tender process and has no involvement in the project.
