African Union Statement on member states failure to Adopt Macky Sall's Candidacy as UN Secretary General.
The African Union Commission (Office of the Secretary to the Commission) presents its compliments to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia and the Permanent Missions of Member States to the African Union and has the honour to refer to Note verbale CCP/OSC/A/A1/056.03.26, dated 26 March 2026 and a corresponding draft Decision, on silence procedure on approving the candidacy of H.E Macky Sall, former President of the Republic of Senegal, for the position of Secretary General of the United Nations.
The Commission wishes to inform the esteemed Ministry and Permanent Missions that by Close of Business today 27th March 2026, which was the set deadline for the silence procedure, twenty (20) Member States have broken the silence to the adoption of the draft decision. Therefore, the circulated draft decision on UN Secretary General candidacy of H.E Macky Sall, former President of the Republic of Senegal, has not been adopted.
The African Union Commission (Office of the Secretary to the Commission) avails itself of this opportunity to renew to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia and the Permanent Missions of Member States to the African Union, the assurances of its highest consideration.
