Govt Statement on Declaration of 27th August as Katiba Day, National Holiday
President William Ruto Statement on Declaring 27 August of every year as Kaitiba Day (translated to: Constitution Day), a National holiday to celebrate promulgation of the constitution of Kenya 2010.
WHEREAS, On the 27th day of August, 2010, in exercise of the sovereign will of the People of Kenya and in revitalizing the foundational principles and values of our democracy, the Constitution of Kenya was promulgated;
WHEREAS, The promulgation of the Constitution of Kenya 2010 marked a defining moment in our nation’s history, heralding a new era of constitutionalism, citizen-centred governance, devolution and equitable development, protection of fundamental rights and freedoms, and a shared aspiration for a more just, equitable, and prosperous nation for all;
WHEREAS, The 27th of August, 2025, marks the fifteenth anniversary of the promulgation of the 2010 Supreme Law; presenting a unique opportunity for celebration of our Constitution which is universally acclaimed as one of the most transformative and progressive in human history; and
WHEREAS, It is befitting for the people of Kenya to commemorate this day as a reminder of our collective duty to obey, preserve, protect and implement the Constitution.
NOW THEREFORE, I, WILLIAM SAMOEI RUTO, President and Commander-in-Chief of the Kenya Defence Forces, by the authority vested in me by the Constitution, do hereby proclaim THAT:
I. 27th August, 2025, and every 27th Day in the Month of August forever thereafter shall be observed as “Katiba Day” in commemoration of the promulgation of the Constitution of Kenya 2010;
II. Katiba Day shall be observed throughout the territory of Kenya and all our diplomatic missions abroad as a day dedicated to renewing our shared commitment to the ideals of our Constitution by fostering national dialogue on constitutionalism, governance, and the rule of law; and
III. While Katiba Day shall remain a working day, all government institutions in the three arms of government and the two levels of governance, including schools, shall organize, hold, and participate in solemn civic activities on that Day to foster constitutional awareness and civic engagement.
IN WITNESS WHEREOF, I hereunto have set my Hand and caused the Public Seal of the Republic to be affixed unto this Presidential Proclamation on this the 27th Day of August in the YEAR OF OUR LORD TWO THOUSAND AND TWENTY-FIVE.
