Mombasa County Govt Statement on Strong Winds and Large Waves Precautionary Measures

Following the advisory issued by the Kenya Meteorological Department on 22nd May 2025 warning of strong southerly winds and large waves expected along the Kenyan Coast, His Excellency Abdullswamad Sherrif Nassir, Governor of Mombasa, convened an emergency meeting of the County Disaster Preparedness Committee. The meeting brought together all relevant stakeholders, including representatives from the National Government Administration Office - State Department for Interior, National Police Service, Kenya Maritime Authority, Kenya Coast Guard Service, Kenya Red Cross, beach management units, and disaster response agencies.

The Meteorological Department has projected wind speeds of up to 25 knots (12.9 m/s) and wave heights of up to 2.5 meters between 23rd and 25th May 2025, posing serious risks to public safety, marine activities, and coastal infrastructure.

Following comprehensive consultations, the following precautionary measures have been adopted:

CLOSURE OF PUBLIC BEACHES

All public beaches in Mombasa County shall remain closed for 2 days effective immediately. All beach-related activities are strictly prohibited during this period.

SUSPENSION OF OCEAN-BASED ACTIVITIES

All marine and ocean-related commercial or recreational activities, including fishing and water sports, are suspended until further notice.

TEMPORARY HALT ON CONSTRUCTION ACTIVITIES

All ongoing construction work across the county is to cease immediately due to the high risk of wind-related hazards. Contractors are directed to secure sites appropriately.

DAILY SITUATION UPDATES

The County Government will be issuing daily situation updates to inform the public and stakeholders of any changes or further directives.

Residents and visitors are urged to comply fully with these safety measures. The County Government is working in close coordination with emergency and maritime agencies to manage the evolving situation and safeguard lives and property.
